What is the Proficiency Bonus in Dungeons & Dragons?
The Proficiency Bonus is a central mechanism in Dungeons & Dragons, especially in 5th Edition. It represents the level of training, experience, or natural talent that a character possesses in certain skills, weapons, tools, saving throws, or spell attacks. The bonus is applied only to rolls where the character actually has proficiency – for example, when they are familiar with a weapon, tool, or skill.
The Proficiency Bonus is added to the dice roll in addition to the appropriate ability modifier. This means: If a character is proficient in “Athletics,” for example, they add both their Strength modifier and the Proficiency Bonus to the roll when making an Athletics check.
Important areas of application:
- Skill checks (e.g., Acrobatics, Survival)
- Saving throws (e.g., Dexterity save, Wisdom save)
- Attack rolls and spell attack rolls
- Tool and weapon use
How the Proficiency Bonus Increases in D&D
The Proficiency Bonus is the same for all characters and is determined exclusively by total character level – regardless of class, race, or multiclassing. This means: A character who combines multiple classes counts all their levels together to determine the bonus.
Table: Proficiency Bonus by Level
| Character Level | Proficiency Bonus |
|---|---|
| 1–4 | +2 |
| 5–8 | +3 |
| 9–12 | +4 |
| 13–16 | +5 |
| 17–20 | +6 |
The bonus increases by +1 approximately every four level-ups and reaches its maximum of +6 at level 17.
Calculation formula:
A common rough formula for calculation is:
Proficiency Bonus = 1 + (Character Level / 4)
Example of Proficiency Bonus Application
Let’s imagine a character – a Ranger at level 3 – wants to make a Perception check. She has:
- Wisdom score: 16 (modifier +3)
- Proficiency Bonus: +2 (since level 3)
- Is proficient in “Perception”
She rolls an 11 on the d20. The calculation looks like this: 11 (roll) + 3 (Wisdom modifier) + 2 (Proficiency Bonus) = 16
The final result is 16. If she had no proficiency in “Perception,” the Proficiency Bonus would not apply and the result would be only 14.
Another example:
Two characters – a Ranger (with Athletics proficiency) and a Barbarian (without) – want to jump over a pit. Both have a Strength modifier of +3.
- The Ranger adds +3 (Strength) +2 (Proficiency) to their roll.
- The Barbarian adds only +3 (Strength).
This gives the Ranger a higher chance of succeeding on the check.
Special Rules and Notes
- The Proficiency Bonus is never applied to damage rolls, only to attack rolls, skill checks, saving throws, and spell difficulty classes.
- With certain class features (e.g., “Expertise” for Bards or Rogues), the Proficiency Bonus can be doubled for selected skills.
- Multiclassing: The bonus is always based on total level, not individual class levels.
