Initiative in Dungeons & Dragons is a central mechanism that determines the order in which characters and creatures act during combat. It reflects the speed and reaction ability of participants and has a significant influence on the course of encounters.

What is Initiative?

Initiative arranges combat participants in an order according to which they perform their actions. At the beginning of combat, each participant rolls a Dexterity check to determine their position in the initiative order. The Dungeon Master (DM) rolls once for a group of similar creatures so that all members of this group act simultaneously and combat becomes less complicated. How is Initiative Calculated?

Initiative calculation is based on a simple Dexterity check (D20 + DEX). Various modifiers can be added to this dice result, provided by abilities, spells, equipment, or special circumstances. A higher Dexterity score therefore increases the chance of being able to act earlier in the round. In case of a tie between rolls, the DM decides the exact order, or rolls again. I personally usually give precedence to the character with the higher Dexterity score.

Why is Initiative Important?

Initiative determines who has the first opportunity to act, which in many cases can be decisive for the outcome of combat. A character or monster that acts first can gain crucial advantages, whether by taking out an opponent before they can act, or through strategic positioning on the battlefield.

For Which Classes is Initiative Particularly Important?

While initiative is important for all classes, those that rely on surprise, tactics, and quick action benefit most from a high value. These include:

  • Rogues: With their ability to deal additional damage on surprise attacks, it’s essential for rogues to act early in combat.
  • Magical Classes: Quickly casting control spells or protective magic can significantly influence the course of combat. Therefore, it can often be decisive whether the Wizard or Sorcerer manages to cast quickly enough.
  • Barbarians and Paladins: These classes can exercise crucial battlefield control or protect allies through early intervention. If they can’t get into the right position quickly enough, it might already be too late.

How Can I Improve My Initiative?

The “Alert” Feat is probably the easiest way for most characters to improve their initiative. It gives +5 to the roll and can be chosen by any class at certain levels. Barbarians already get Advantage, but there are also items like Rod of Alertness, Sentinel Shield, and Weapon of Warning which give advantage on your initiative rolls. For magical classes, there’s also the possibility to improve their initiative with spells like Guidance and Enhance Ability.
