The Gunslinger is a homebrew class in D&D that gives the classic Western mythos a fantasy twist. He is the master of firearms, a tactical ranged fighter with a touch of steampunk who dominates combat with thunderous guns and precision. The Gunslinger offers players a stylish and mechanically exciting alternative to traditional ranged combatants like Rangers or Rogues.
The class was developed by Matthew Mercer for his Critical Role character Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III and first published on D&D Beyond in 2015. Since then it has been revised multiple times and remains a popular homebrew addition, especially for players who love technology, firearms, and tactical gameplay.

Trick Shots
Starting at 3rd level, the Gunslinger gains access to so-called Trick Shots – special maneuvers that enhance their attacks with effects like Prone, Disarm, Piercing Shot, or Violent Shot. These consume Grit Points, a resource that regenerates through critical hits or certain actions.
List:
💥 Bullying Shot
Use 1 Grit to gain advantage on a Charisma (Intimidation) check – thanks to the gunshot and intimidation effect.
😵 Dazing Shot
If you hit with an attack and spend 1 Grit, the target must make a Constitution save or have disadvantage on attacks until the end of its next turn.
🎯 Deadeye Shot
Spend 1 Grit to gain advantage on an attack roll.
🤚 Disarming Shot
On a hit, the target must make a Strength save or drop a held object, which is knocked 10 feet away.
🚶♂️ Forceful Shot
If you hit, the target must make a Strength save or be pushed back 15 feet.
📍 Piercing Shot
With 1 Grit, you pierce through multiple enemies in a line behind the target. Increases misfire chance (+1) and attacks beyond the first are made with disadvantage.
🔥 Violent Shot
For each Grit you spend, you increase the misfire chance (+2) and add one additional weapon damage die.
🏃♂️ Winging Shot
If you hit, the target must make a Strength save or be knocked prone.
Grit
Grit is the heart of the Gunslinger system. The points serve as “stamina” for Trick Shots and allow the player to dynamically adapt their actions. Well-aimed or cleverly used, a single Grit point can drastically change the outcome of a battle.
The Gunslinger’s Role in the Party
Gunslinger Strengths
- High ranged damage: Perfect for players who want to eliminate enemies before they can even attack.
- Tactical variety: The Trick Shots offer control, utility, and flexibility.
- Style: The Gunslinger is visually and thematically unique – whether dark gunslinger or mechanical sniper.
Gunslinger Challenges
- Complexity: Managing Grit, reload times, and misfires requires strategic thinking.
- Malfunctions: Firearms have a chance to jam or fail – this is part of the flair but also a risk.
- Resource dependency: Without Grit, the Gunslinger loses much effectiveness.
How to Create a Gunslinger?
Attributes
- Dexterity: Essential for attack rolls, armor, and initiative.
- Wisdom: Affects Grit points and some abilities.
- Constitution: For survivability – indispensable for any front-line or ranged fighter.
Equipment
- Firearms: Depending on the setting, these can be pistols, muskets, or more exotic inventions.
- Armor: Light to medium armor allows mobility and protection.
- Tool kits: Tinker’s Tools are important for weapon maintenance.
Background
Ideal backgrounds include Soldier, Guild Artisan, Bounty Hunter, or Noble (for players like Percy de Rolo), which bring technology, ambition, or tragedy to the character.
Famous Gunslingers
Percival de Rolo III (Critical Role, Campaign 1)
Percy is the archetype of the noble inventor with a dark past. His journey from traumatized refugee to brilliant inventor and finally to hero is closely tied to the development of the Gunslinger archetype. His iconic thunder weapon The List with engraved names of the guilty symbolizes both vengeance and self-destruction – perfect themes for this class.
Roland Deschain (The Dark Tower)
The last gunslinger – Roland is the epitome of the lonely, stoic gunslinger in a dark fantasy world. His deadly precision, his code of honor, and his epic journey through space and time make him the ideal template for a D&D Gunslinger with tragic background and superhuman focus.
Rocket Raccoon (Guardians of the Galaxy)
A genetically modified tech freak with a preference for explosions, crazy weapons, and biting remarks. Rocket is a prime example of a chaotic neutral Gunslinger with “Tinkerer” flavor – ideal for players who want to bring humor and chaos to the game.
