The appearance of your character in Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most important elements of character creation. If you only superficially describe your character’s clothing and weapons, it’s often hard for you and the other players to imagine them. Pictures can give you inspiration and represent your character for a long time to come. In this post I want to show you how I find pictures, create them with AI, and incorporate them into my game.

Finding Pictures for D&D Characters

Depending on what setting you’re playing in, various sources come into question of course. I personally often play in fantasy worlds. One of the best sources for any kind of character art in this area is Magic the Gathering (e.g. found on artofmtg.com). This is a card game that has existed for a very long time and therefore has depicted many thousands of characters.

  • Melira, the Living Cure MtG Art from Phyrexia: All Will Be One by Miranda Meeks
  • Drafna, Founder of Lat-Nam MtG Art from The Brothers' War by Lie Setiawan
  • Obyra, Dreaming Duelist MtG Art from Wilds of Eldraine by Evyn Fong

If you’re in a different setting, Artstation.com is a good starting point for pictures. Here you’ll find both portraits and everything else. Of course you can also search here for fantasy setting characters or even explicitly for D&D fan art and you’ll definitely find a lot.
