Starting Feat
The Magic Initiate feat allows you to learn a few spells from another class. Perfect for an acolyte who might start as a Paladin or Cleric but shows magical abilities early on.
Skills and Languages
Two skills (usually thematically appropriate) and often additional languages or tool proficiencies round out the background.

Acolyte
Perfect for religious characters of all classes. The ability score increases support both mental and social abilities, while the Magic Initiate feat provides early access to spells.
Criminal
Increases Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma – ideal for rogues, but also interesting for warlocks or other classes that benefit from social manipulation. The Alert feat ensures you’re rarely surprised.
Folk Hero
With increases in Strength, Wisdom, and Charisma plus the Tough feat, this background is tailor-made for fighters and paladins who come from humble beginnings.
Noble
Increases Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma and comes with the Skilled feat. Perfect for characters who have enjoyed a comprehensive education and should shine in social situations.
Soldier
Strength, Constitution, and Charisma are increased, plus the Savage Attacker feat. A classic for fighters, but also interesting for war clerics or military paladin concepts.
Strategic Considerations in Character Creation
The new importance of backgrounds opens up completely new strategic possibilities. Previously, you were often dependent on your ancestry bringing the “right” ability score increases for your class. Now you can be more creative.
Unconventional Combinations
Want to play a halfling barbarian? No problem! Just choose a background like Soldier or Folk Hero that increases Strength. The missing Strength increase from halflings is compensated by the background.
Multiclass Preparation
The flexible ability score increases of backgrounds make it easier to create characters that can later branch into multiple classes. An Acolyte background can provide the right foundation for both a cleric-warlock and a druid-sorcerer.
Tips for Dungeon Masters
As a Dungeon Master, you should consider the new significance of backgrounds in your campaign. These are no longer just fluff, but actively shape how characters are played.
- Background-specific scenes: Use the feats and skills of backgrounds for special moments
- Story integration: The increased mechanical significance justifies weaving backgrounds more strongly into the main story
