With the revised D&D 5.5e Player’s Handbook, there were numerous adjustments to all classes in 2024. The paladin is one of those classes that had to accept profound changes. In this article, we focus on the most relevant differences for paladins, which primarily highlight the hybrid nature of this class. Since these changes are so extensive, we recommend taking a close look at the Player’s Handbook.

More options for the paladin in the early game

Players of the divine warrior should get an early insight into the play style of their class. While in D&D 5e from 2014, the play style only really took shape at level 2 and became established at level 3, the paladin can now cast spells at level 1. The popular Lay on Hands is therefore also available at level 1 and now only requires a bonus action instead of an action. This has several advantages, but also one disadvantage that becomes apparent at level 2. More on that later. Lay on Hands can now also be used on undead and constructs, but no longer heals diseases.

At level 1, Weapon Mastery is added, which we already explained for the 2024 barbarian and the 2024 warrior. This ability allows the paladin to use special combat effects on selected weapons.

Divine Smite: Controversial Action Management

Divine Smite is available from level 2 onwards. This ability, which is firmly anchored to the Paladin, did not function as a real spell in the old Player’s Handbook, but rather as a feature: as long as there were enough spell slots available, the Paladin could use Smite on each of his attacks. Smite did not require a separate action or bonus action. This allowed the Paladin to burst massive damage in a single round – and thus potentially cause the most damage.

This is no longer possible, as Divine Smite now costs a bonus action. This prevents the paladin from stacking multiple Smites in a single round. Incidentally, this also means that you can no longer add Smite to opportunity attacks. However, Divine Smite can now be used once per day for free and can also be applied to unarmed attacks.

How do these changes affect the paladin’s combat style?

For the paladin, this ultimately means that resource and action management must be rethought. Attentive players will have noticed that lay on hands is now also a bonus action. The paladin must therefore consider what they want to do in combat: Do I use my bonus action for Smite? Or would I rather heal? Do I save Smite in case an enemy wants to get into my backline and I need to destroy them on the next turn?

In addition, the Paladin is no longer an all-purpose weapon. This has deprived him of the ability, so popular with players, to stand in the front row like God’s shield and sword and strike down the most dangerous opponent in a round with two Smite-enhanced attacks.

Spells, oaths, and auras: Stronger in support

The Paladin now has a fixed number of prepared spells at their disposal, which significantly simplifies the spell system. Auras also remain a central element and have been usefully expanded. Channel Divinity (from level 3) can now be used up to twice per long rest and includes automatic Divine Senses, which lasts for 10 minutes and allows you to sense the presence of celestial and undead creatures as well as fiends, among other things.

At higher levels, the paladin’s power as a supporter is significantly enhanced by control abilities and auras such as Abjure Foes and Aura of Courage. For more information, please refer to the D&D Player’s Handbook 2024.

The paladin’s subclasses: Oaths reduced to four

As with all classes, the paladin’s subclasses, called oaths, have been reduced to four:

Oath of Devotion

Oath of Glory

Oath of the Ancients

Oath of Vengeance

These have not changed fundamentally, but now include parts of the other oaths.

Conclusion: The nerf hammer has struck

While many classes have seen some improvements in the 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒, most notably the monk, the paladin has been hit hard. Although the class has become much more interesting to play, fans of the classic burst-through-smite paladin are deeply disappointed by the changes, even though he still packs a punch. On the other hand, the paladin is now the ideal class for anyone who appreciates solid tank support.

The monk is one of the classes that received the most adjustments in the 2024 revision of Dungeons & Dragons to D&D 5.5e. In the case of the monk, this was definitely justified: the class was considered categorically underplayed because it was simply too weak in comparison. In this article, we will examine the most relevant changes in detail and show how the monk has evolved in the new standard work compared to the classic 5e gameplay. Since, as with the druid, we cannot cover all the changes in one article, we highly recommend the 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒.

This article contains affiliate links where we receive a part of the purchase price.
New basic abilities and focus points

Already at Level 1 the basic ability Martial Arts has been significantly improved. Whereas the classic monk in 5e could only perform an unarmed strike as a bonus action under certain conditions, the monk in 5.5e can do this anytime, regardless of whether a weapon attack was made previously or not. Moreover, the Martial Arts die starts at 1d6 and scales up to 1d12, delivering significantly more damage compared to its previous range of 1d4–1d10.

An equally significant change concerns Grapples and Shoves: the monk can now use their Dexterity instead of Strength for these actions. This reinforces the monk’s role as a nimble, agile melee fighter.

Upon reaching Level 2, it’s noticeable that Ki Points are now called Focus Points. Here commence the first abilities that cost Focus Points: Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, and Step of the Wind.

Revised Focus Abilities: Patient Defense & Step of the Wind

The classic abilities Patient Defense and Step of the Wind have been completely revamped and offer significantly more flexibility in the 2024 edition. Both can now be used either with or without expending Focus Points.

Patient Defense as a defensive focus ability now allows performing a Disengage as a free bonus action. If a Focus Point is spent, it additionally includes a Dodge, placing all incoming attacks at a disadvantage and giving the monk an advantage on Dexterity saving throws.

Step of the Wind enables a Dash as a bonus action for free. With Focus, it adds Disengage and doubles jump distance until the end of your turn.

This adjustment allows the monk to consistently utilize their bonus actions, aligning them with other mobile classes like the rogue.

New Resource Management Tool: Uncanny Metabolism

At Level 2, the monk in D&D 5.5e gains Uncanny Metabolism: Once per long rest, a monk can roll initiative to regain all of his Focus Points

and also heal hit points based on his Martial Arts die and level. This modification resolves a longstanding issue from the old version, where Ki Points were quickly depleted and regenerated slowly.

Deflect Attacks: More than Just Deflecting Projectiles

The classic ability Deflect Missiles was quite limited in 5e, working only against projectile weapons. In 5.5e, this ability has been extended to Deflect Attacks, now reducing physical damage from both melee and ranged attacks (bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing). If the total damage is reduced to 0, the monk can spend a focus point to redirect the attack to a different target.

The New Features at Higher Levels

Heightened Focus (Level 10) significantly enhances Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, and Step of the Wind, each adding features such as extra attacks or temporary hit points.

Self-Restoration (Level 10) allows the monk to automatically remove conditions such as

Charmed, Frightened, or Poisoned at the end of their turn.

Deflect Energy (Level 13) extends Deflect Attacks to include damage of all types.

Perfect Focus (Level 14) regenerates Focus Points at the start of an encounter if fewer than three Focus Points are available and Uncanny Metabolism has not been used before.

Superior Defense (Level 18) allows, upon spending Focus Points, resistance against all types of damage (except force) for a certain period.

Body and Mind (Level 20) grants a +4 bonus to Dexterity and Wisdom, up to a maximum of 25.

A Quick Overview: The Monk’s Subclasses

In the new edition, there are four Monk subclasses:

Warrior of the Elements

Warrior of the Open Hand

Warrior of Shadow

Warrior of Mercy, which has moved from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything into the Player’s Handbook.

For more details on the subclasses/paths, pick up the 5.5e Player’s Handbook.

Conclusion: An All-Around Improved Monk

The 2024 D&D 5.5e Monk is vastly superior to its 2014 version in every way. Once considered the weakest class, it has become one of the stronger ones, offering enjoyment through enhanced basic abilities, a new resource management mechanic, and powerful features at higher levels.

The Wizard is one of the most iconic and oldest classes in Dungeons & Dragons. With the revision from the D&D 5e Player’s Handbook to the new 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒, the Wizards do not experience many changes compared to the druid, for example, but a number of noticeable ones. In this article, we take a look at what has changed for Wizards, what new mechanics have been added and what this specifically means for the game.

This article contains affiliate links where we receive a part of the purchase price.
Changes in the basic mechanics

Although the Wizard class was already solid in the original 5e version, the Player’s Handbook 5.5e brings some targeted adjustments. For example, Spellcasting has been slightly revised: Wizards can now exchange a cantrip during a long rest, among other things, which brings flexibility that was not previously provided. They also gain expertise in a skill area at a lower level, which further emphasizes their role as intellectuals and problem solvers.

In addition, from level 5, the Wizard may swap an already prepared spell for another one at every short rest using the “Memorize Spell” ability. This change noticeably improves tactical flexibility, as the Wizard is no longer dependent on a long rest to switch spells.

Subclasses & Arcane Traditions: greatly reduced, but more focused

One striking aspect of the revision is the drastic reduction of Arcane Traditions/Subclasses for Wizards: In the 5.5e version, there are only four schools to choose from: The schools of Abjuration, Divination, Evocation, and Illusion will remain. This means that the schools of Necromancy, Enchantment, Conjuration, and Transmutation are no longer available as Arcane Traditions in the new version.

Each of the four remaining schools receives targeted improvements or new features:

School of Abjuration: Wizards of this subclass receive an Arcane Ward feature that can now be regenerated by using a spell; in addition, resistances/immunities of damage effects are clearly taken into account beforehand.

School of Divination: This school retains its basic concept, but Wizards of this school will now be able to cast “See Invisibility” without using a spell slot.

School of Evocation: Damage is the focus – with changes such as “Potent Cantrip”, where a cantrip deals at least half damage even if an attack fails.

School of Illusion: This school has the most extensive revisions – illusion spells with verbal components are dropped, ranges are extended, and new features such as “Phantasmal Creatures” have been added.

This focus means that the Wizard class offers less subclass variety, but each remaining school is strengthened in a targeted manner. However, the loss of the schools does not necessarily mean that the corresponding spells are lost. You can still learn and use spells such as necromancy. You can find out which spells are available in detail in the new 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒.

What does this mean for the game?

These changes have some important implications for players and Dungeon Masters. By swapping cantrips and prepared spells, the Wizard becomes more agile and can react better to different situations without having to wait for the next long rest. The expertise in a skill supports the classic role of the Wizard as a scholar and problem solver, not just a damage dealer. Those who miss the classic schools such as Necromancy or Enchantment must decide: Either fall back on older rules, adjust to the four new schools, or switch to another class, such as the Warlock for Necromancers.

The reduction in subclasses bothers some players, but the improved overview, focus and revised abilities are expected to make the game more fluid and balanced. For example, the rules regarding resistances and immunities are now clearer before the Arcane Ward is reduced.

Short overview of the important new features

Exchanging a cantrip after a long rest.

Swapping a prepared spell after a short rest (from level 5).

Expertise in a skill area from level 2.

Arcane traditions/subclasses reduced to four schools.

Each school with new or improved core features (e.g., Potent Cantrip for Evocation; Improved Illusions for Illusion).

Clearer rules regarding resistances/immunities in relation to class features.

Conclusion

The revision of the Wizard class in D&D 5.5e does not involve a complete redesign but targeted fine-tuning. The effects are significant. Those who want to play a Wizard in 5.5e will benefit from greater flexibility and cleaner mechanics. However, those who focused on exotic schools such as Necromancy or Transmutation will be disappointed with the changes. Overall, however, it can be said that the Wizard remains powerful, just a bit leaner.

The Warlock is one of the most versatile and complex classes in Dungeons & Dragons. Many players are now asking themselves: What exactly has been changed in the Player’s Handbook 5.5e (2024)? In this article, we highlight the most relevant changes between the classic 5e warlock and the new version in 5.5e.

Everything for a good story: Patron only from level 3

One of the most striking changes concerns the Patron, the entity from which the warlocks draw their power. In D&D 5e, you had your patron from level 1. In D&D 5.5e, this only happens at level 3. In the Player’s Handbook 5e, the patron could be a Fiend, Archfey, or Great Old One. In 5.5e, the Celestials, from “Xanathar’s Guide to Everything”, were added into the Player’s Handbook as possible patrons. However, covenants that now belong to the Eldritch Invocations may now be chosen from level 1. More on this in the following section.

Many refer to this change as “Story Flavor”. The warlock does not know his patron at the beginning and the gamemaster can let the warlock’s experiences subtly introduce the patron throughout gameplay. The moment of recognizing the patron can then be dramatically played out at the table.

Eldritch Invocations and the Abolition of the Pact Boons

The Level 3 Pact Boons have effectively been abolished. Before panic sets in: The pacts are still there. The pacts – Chain, Blade, and Book – remain, but are now Eldritch Invocations and therefore available from level 1. However, many of these Invocations now have level requirements that did not previously exist.

The selection of Eldritch Invocations has also been expanded. As before, however, you can exchange Invocations with each other when leveling up, as long as you don’t want to remove Invocations that are interdependent. Up to level 18, a Warlock in 2024 can have up to 10 Invocations, instead of the 8 in 5e.

Popular invocations such as Repelling Blast and Agonizing Blast are also no longer limited to the Eldritch Blast, but can now be applied to other cantrips. This means that the charisma modifier can now be added to the damage value of all cantrips. Note that Repelling Blast is still limited to cantrips that require an attack roll.

How do pacts work for the Warlock in D&D 5.5e?

Pacts now fall under Invocations and are available from level 1. You are also no longer limited to one pact when leveling up and can theoretically choose all of them, as they are Invocations. Like all Invocations, you can also change the pacts when leveling up.

From a gameplay perspective, this makes sense, as you can determine your playstyle right at the start. With a level 1 Pact of the Blade, the Warlock works better as a melee fighter in the early stages. But you also want a familiar at level 2? No problem: Choose the Pact of the Chain as an Invocation. If you need a little more magic trickery, consider taking the Pact of the Tome and have your patron hand you the Book of Shadows when you level up again. If you want all three pacts, you can have all three pacts.

Adjustments to the subclasses

In addition to the core changes, each subclass (patron) has undergone some adjustments:

Archfey: Additional effects for teleportation, mixed forms of movement spells, etc.

Celestial: Introduced in the new rulebooks (in 5e via “Xanathar’s Guide to Everything”) available or rebalanced. Celestial Warlocks have significantly more spells, including Summon Celestial.

Fiend: Classic mechanics such as gaining temporary hit points (Dark One’s Blessing) have been reworked so that you gain bonus HP even if it’s not you who defeats the enemy, but someone nearby.

Great Old One: These have been heavily reworked. Essentially, the Great Old One has been completely rebuilt as a patron. Small teaser: Summon Aberrations and more powerful Mind control. Consult the Player’s Handbook urgently!

Conclusion

The Warlock becomes more modular, more flexible, and in many cases more powerful. Some players criticize the late subclass selection (only from level 3) as a narrative break, while others celebrate this as a great story element. Many welcome the strengthened base class and the more deeply integrated options, especially with regard to the warlock in melee combat. It remains to be seen how the changes will affect gameplay at the table.

The Ranger class in D&D reflects versatile and experienced adventurers. As masters of the wilderness, expert trackers and deadly marksmen, Rangers bring a unique set of skills and a deep connection to nature to their adventuring parties. Whether striking from the shadows or communing with the creatures of the wild, Rangers offer a diverse range of play styles that can intrigue newcomers and experienced players alike.

Thank you 🙂

Specialists of the wilderness

At the core of the Ranger class (found in the Player’s Handbook 🛒) lies their exceptional ability to navigate unruly landscapes. Rangers are characterized by their survival skills and can easily move through dense forests, climb dangerous mountains and even move silently in urban environments.

Their ability to forage for food, find fresh water sources and avoid natural hazards makes them invaluable companions on long journeys or in exploration-oriented campaigns.

Rangers can be deadly at all distances

Rangers are fearsome warriors who are equally adept with both ranged and melee weapons. Thanks to their expertise in archery, they can hit their targets from afar with precision and deadly accuracy. Rangers are also highly skilled in melee combat and can wield weapons such as swords or fight gracefully and precisely with two daggers. This versatility allows Rangers to adapt to different combat scenarios and contribute to the success of their party.

Ranger class in DnD: Mark of the Hunter and Archfiend

Two iconic features of the Ranger class are the Mark of the Hunter and the Archfiend. The Mark of the Hunter boosts the Ranger’s attacks and deals additional damage to the selected target. This ability provides very reliable and high damage and makes them dangerous opponents in battle (so always remember to use it!).

The Archfiend, on the other hand, gives Rangers a deep understanding of certain types of creatures and provides advantages in tracking, dealing with and fighting them. This unique connection to certain enemies reinforces the ranger’s role as a skilled hunter and protector of nature. It is a good idea to talk to your DM when creating your character in order to choose an arch-enemy that makes sense. Otherwise, you may end up with water dwellers as arch-enemies, for example, while the entire campaign takes place in a desert. Then you simply won’t be able to use the ability much.

Animal companions and spellcasting

Another defining characteristic of the ranger class is their connection to the animal kingdom. Through their class features, rangers can form close bonds with animals and summon them as loyal companions to aid them in their adventures. From loyal wolves to majestic eagles, these animal companions provide many role-playing moments as well as additional combat support, exploration skills and improve the ranger’s overall survivability.

In addition to their martial strength, rangers have a limited ability to cast spells. While not as powerful as specialized druids, rangers have access to a number of spells that complement their wilderness abilities and increase their combat effectiveness. These spells can include healing spells, nature-based enchantments and utility spells to aid in exploration and survival. They can also magically enhance their attacks.

Ranger class in DnD: Conclusion

The Ranger class in Dungeons and Dragons 5e is a fascinating mix of physical combat ability, wilderness survival and mystical connection to nature. Their ability to adapt to different environments, track down enemies and deliver deadly attacks from afar or in close combat makes them an excellent choice for players looking for a versatile and self-reliant character. With their animal companions, spellcasting abilities and deep understanding of the natural world, Rangers bring a unique flavor to adventuring parties and leave a memorable impression on any campaign they participate in.

When it comes to a mix of divine magic and martial prowess, paladins are at the forefront of the world of Dungeons & Dragons 5E. A paladin is not only a warrior of good, he is also a symbol of righteousness, a guardian of the sword and the light. With the gods on your side, no one can stop you!

What makes a paladin?

A paladin combines the holiness of a priest with the fighting skills of a knight. He draws strength from his divine faith, be it through prayer, meditation or a special oath he has taken.

Core characteristics of a paladin

Divine Sense: Paladins receive their magic through their faith and can use it to heal, bless or even banish the undead.

Lay on Hands: Once touched, a paladin can heal with their divine energy.

Channel Divinity: Depending on the oath, the paladin receives incredible powers from a god.

Divine Smite: The paladin can enhance his attacks with divine power, causing extremely high damage.

The power of the oath

Every paladin takes a sacred oath that defines their connection to divine power. This oath is not only a promise, but also shapes the paladin’s character and path.

Oath of the Ancients: An alliance with ancient nature and its deities.

Oath of Conquest: A vow to dominate and control enemies.

Oath of Devotion: Embodies the virtuous, protective knight.

Oath of the Crown: Loyalty to a sovereignty or feudal lord.

Oath of Redeption: Focused on purity and the removal of evil.

Oath of Vengeance: Driven by personal trauma and the need for retribution.

Oath of Glory: In search of glory and heroism.

Oath of the Watchers: Always ready to fight evil.

Role of the paladin in the party

The paladin is often the moral center of an adventuring party. With his ability to heal and his robust defense, he can be on the front line while also providing support and leadership. He is a mixture of cleric and barbarian.
While many paladins stand for righteousness and good, the possibility of an evil paladin is not excluded. In D&D, the possibilities are endless, so let your ideas run wild! A paladin could be driven by revenge or have an oath with darker forces. Such a character offers a fascinating depth and shows that shadows can lurk even in the holiest class.

Regardless of oath or creed, it is important to emphasize that paladins are characters of deep conviction and determination. They fight not only against external enemies, but also for inner ideals and values.

From light and shadow, good and evil – Paladins offer a deep and nuanced gameplay experience in D&D 5E. Each paladin will surely write their own epic story.

In the multifaceted world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) 5E, monks are much more than mere fighters. They combine spiritual practices with impressive physical abilities and thus offer a unique gaming experience.

The tradition of monks in D&D has its roots in ancient cultures and martial arts traditions. Early on in the game’s development, monks were introduced as a class that balances body and mind.

Strengths and abilities of monks

Monks are not only gifted melee fighters, they also have a variety of special abilities that set them apart from other classes. Through their training, they can channel their life energy to heal themselves, predict the movements of their opponents, or even use magical powers.

In the world of D&D, Ki points represent the spiritual energy of a monk and are central to many of their impressive abilities. With these points, a monk can tap into their inner reserves and perform extraordinary feats. Some of the most popular uses of Ki points include:

Flurry of Blows: After a monk performs their regular attack, they can spend one ki point to make two additional unarmed strikes.

Patient Defense: By spending a ki point, a monk can respond to an attack by making a counterattack, reducing the incoming damage.

Step of the Wind: With a ki point, monks can double their speed, allowing them to act incredibly quickly or move out of dangerous situations.

These Ki abilities are just a small sample of what is available to a monk, and they provide many strategic options in the game. It is important for a monk player to manage their ki points wisely, as they are a limited supply that replenishes only after a rest.

The different monk traditions

In D&D 5E there are different traditions or subclasses of monks. Each has its own unique skills and techniques:

The Way of the Open Hand: Specializing in hand-to-hand combat and impressive striking techniques.

The Way of Shadow: Uses stealth and cunning to achieve his goals.

The Way of the Four Elements: Enables the monk to manipulate elemental forces such as fire, water, earth, and air.

Integration into role-playing campaigns

Monks can play an interesting and dynamic role in any D&D campaign. With their combination of physical strength and spiritual abilities, they are often the ones who can make the difference at critical moments.

The role of the background

While skills and traditions are important, a monk’s background can say a lot about his motivations and behavior in the game. Perhaps he is seeking enlightenment or has a personal goal that he wants to achieve at all costs.

Tips for playing a monk

Connect with your inner self: Remember that monks often have a deeper connection to themselves and their surroundings.

Use your abilities wisely: Instead of acting impulsively, think about when and how best to use your monk abilities. Ki points are very limited, especially at the beginning.

Develop your character further: The journey of a monk is often also a journey of self-awareness. Let your character grow and develop.

Conclusion on monks in D&D

The monks in D&D 5E offer a rich and profound gaming experience. With their combination of martial arts, mysticism, and inner strength, they are a class that will delight both new and experienced players alike.

Druids are guardians of the natural world who draw mystical energy from their connection to nature. As a character class in D&D 5E, they represent a unique blend of sorcerers, healers, and warriors who excel at both direct confrontation and supporting their allies.

Transmutability: The Art of Transformation

One of the druids’s best-known abilities is the Wild Shape feature. With this ability, druids can transform into various animals, from powerful bears to fast birds. Each animal form has its own strengths and weaknesses, making druids useful in a variety of situations.

Spells and the Druidic Connection to Nature

In addition to their shapeshifting abilities, druids are also talented spellcasters. They draw their magic from nature and can cast a variety of spells focusing on healing, control, and damage. Some of their most powerful spells allow them to manipulate the weather or turn the earth itself against their enemies.

Many of the spells are very powerful but require concentration, so as a druid, you should carefully consider which of your “big” spells can be most useful in a particular situation. Also, make sure not to get hit too often to keep your spells active!

Supporting Masters

Druids are not only strong on the offensive. With a variety of healing spells and support spells, they can prove to be invaluable allies in any adventuring party. Their ability to both deal damage and heal makes them versatile and valuable members of any team.

Druids are extremely helpful, especially in campaigns where the party must survive long periods in dangerous areas. They are very good at providing food and protection from the elements and finding the right path.

The Circles of the Druids

In D&D 5E, druids choose a specific “circle” that determines their focus and special abilities. Whether it’s the Circle of the Land, which focuses on connection to the terrain, or the Circle of the Moon, which emphasizes transformation abilities, each circle offers its own playstyle.

Equipment and Weapons

Although they are magical beings, druids often wear simple clothing and equipment that reflects their connection to nature. They typically prefer items made of wood, bone, or stone and avoid metal, especially for their weapons and armor, as metal limits their magical abilities.

Of course, you can also discuss this with your Dungeon Master to get around this limitation. For example, I once played a druid who could talk to stones instead of plants and animals. For him, restrictions like metal were less applicable. As always, Dungeons and Dragons offers you all the freedom you need!

Final Thoughts on Druids

Druids are a complex and versatile class, offering players a wide range of possibilities. Whether you decide to play as a healing supporter, a damage-dealing caster, or a front-line warrior using the Wild Shape ability, druids provide a rich and engaging gameplay experience.

Thank you for reading, and may nature always be by your side!

The Bard in D&D: A Versatile Hero

Bards are masters of many talents and can shine in many different roles. With their versatility, they can find their place in any adventuring party. Their skills are wide-ranging, from wizard to warrior to scholar and diplomat – there is hardly a situation in which a bard would not be useful. Don’t let yourself be pushed too much into a role that fits the stereotypes but doesn’t suit you. Especially with bards, you shouldn’t set any limits to your creativity!

Bardic Magic: Music and Words

Bards in D&D use music and words to channel their magic. They are able to cast their spells through songs, poems, jokes, and stories, which sets them apart from other magical classes. Their access to a wide range of spells allows them to be extremely effective in both combat and social situations.

The Bard College: Choice of Specialization

In D&D 5E, bards have access to various “Bard Colleges,” which are types of specializations for their class. These range from the College of Valor, which transforms the bard into a brave front-line fighter, to the College of Whispers, transforming bards into master manipulators and schemers.

Bards and their Abilities: Inspiring Adventurers

Bards are not only known for their magical abilities but also for their ability to empower their allies through their Bardic Inspiration. This ability allows them to distribute bonus dice to their allies to increase their chances of success – a truly inspiring sight! Depending on which Bard College you choose, you can use your inspiration dice for a wide variety of things. Here are a few examples:

College of Eloquence: With the “Unforgettable Words” ability, a Bard of Eloquence can use his Bardic Inspiration to discourage an opponent. The bard can use his Bardic Inspiration die to reduce the result of a target’s ability roll, attack roll, or saving throw.

College of Swords: A bard of the College of Swords can use his Bardic Inspiration as “Combat Flourish” to improve his combat abilities. Examples include the “Defensive Flourish” (which increases the bard’s AC), the “Slashing Flourish” (which deals additional damage to surrounding enemies), and the “Mobile Flourish” (which allows the bard to push an enemy away or move himself).

College of Creation: A bard of the College of Creation can use their Bardic Inspiration to utilize the “Performance of Creation” ability. This allows him to create temporary, non-magical items. The size, type, and quantity of items created depend on the size of the Bardic Inspiration die used.

Conclusion on Bards in D&D
