With the revised D&D 5.5e Player’s Handbook, there were numerous adjustments to all classes in 2024. The paladin is one of those classes that had to accept profound changes. In this article, we focus on the most relevant differences for paladins, which primarily highlight the hybrid nature of this class. Since these changes are so extensive, we recommend taking a close look at the Player’s Handbook.

More options for the paladin in the early game

Players of the divine warrior should get an early insight into the play style of their class. While in D&D 5e from 2014, the play style only really took shape at level 2 and became established at level 3, the paladin can now cast spells at level 1. The popular Lay on Hands is therefore also available at level 1 and now only requires a bonus action instead of an action. This has several advantages, but also one disadvantage that becomes apparent at level 2. More on that later. Lay on Hands can now also be used on undead and constructs, but no longer heals diseases.

At level 1, Weapon Mastery is added, which we already explained for the 2024 barbarian and the 2024 warrior. This ability allows the paladin to use special combat effects on selected weapons.

Divine Smite: Controversial Action Management

Divine Smite is available from level 2 onwards. This ability, which is firmly anchored to the Paladin, did not function as a real spell in the old Player’s Handbook, but rather as a feature: as long as there were enough spell slots available, the Paladin could use Smite on each of his attacks. Smite did not require a separate action or bonus action. This allowed the Paladin to burst massive damage in a single round – and thus potentially cause the most damage.

This is no longer possible, as Divine Smite now costs a bonus action. This prevents the paladin from stacking multiple Smites in a single round. Incidentally, this also means that you can no longer add Smite to opportunity attacks. However, Divine Smite can now be used once per day for free and can also be applied to unarmed attacks.

How do these changes affect the paladin’s combat style?

For the paladin, this ultimately means that resource and action management must be rethought. Attentive players will have noticed that lay on hands is now also a bonus action. The paladin must therefore consider what they want to do in combat: Do I use my bonus action for Smite? Or would I rather heal? Do I save Smite in case an enemy wants to get into my backline and I need to destroy them on the next turn?

In addition, the Paladin is no longer an all-purpose weapon. This has deprived him of the ability, so popular with players, to stand in the front row like God’s shield and sword and strike down the most dangerous opponent in a round with two Smite-enhanced attacks.

Spells, oaths, and auras: Stronger in support

The Paladin now has a fixed number of prepared spells at their disposal, which significantly simplifies the spell system. Auras also remain a central element and have been usefully expanded. Channel Divinity (from level 3) can now be used up to twice per long rest and includes automatic Divine Senses, which lasts for 10 minutes and allows you to sense the presence of celestial and undead creatures as well as fiends, among other things.

At higher levels, the paladin’s power as a supporter is significantly enhanced by control abilities and auras such as Abjure Foes and Aura of Courage. For more information, please refer to the D&D Player’s Handbook 2024.

The paladin’s subclasses: Oaths reduced to four

As with all classes, the paladin’s subclasses, called oaths, have been reduced to four:

Oath of Devotion

Oath of Glory

Oath of the Ancients

Oath of Vengeance

These have not changed fundamentally, but now include parts of the other oaths.

Conclusion: The nerf hammer has struck

While many classes have seen some improvements in the 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒, most notably the monk, the paladin has been hit hard. Although the class has become much more interesting to play, fans of the classic burst-through-smite paladin are deeply disappointed by the changes, even though he still packs a punch. On the other hand, the paladin is now the ideal class for anyone who appreciates solid tank support.

The monk is one of the classes that received the most adjustments in the 2024 revision of Dungeons & Dragons to D&D 5.5e. In the case of the monk, this was definitely justified: the class was considered categorically underplayed because it was simply too weak in comparison. In this article, we will examine the most relevant changes in detail and show how the monk has evolved in the new standard work compared to the classic 5e gameplay. Since, as with the druid, we cannot cover all the changes in one article, we highly recommend the 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒.

This article contains affiliate links where we receive a part of the purchase price.
New basic abilities and focus points

Already at Level 1 the basic ability Martial Arts has been significantly improved. Whereas the classic monk in 5e could only perform an unarmed strike as a bonus action under certain conditions, the monk in 5.5e can do this anytime, regardless of whether a weapon attack was made previously or not. Moreover, the Martial Arts die starts at 1d6 and scales up to 1d12, delivering significantly more damage compared to its previous range of 1d4–1d10.

An equally significant change concerns Grapples and Shoves: the monk can now use their Dexterity instead of Strength for these actions. This reinforces the monk’s role as a nimble, agile melee fighter.

Upon reaching Level 2, it’s noticeable that Ki Points are now called Focus Points. Here commence the first abilities that cost Focus Points: Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, and Step of the Wind.

Revised Focus Abilities: Patient Defense & Step of the Wind

The classic abilities Patient Defense and Step of the Wind have been completely revamped and offer significantly more flexibility in the 2024 edition. Both can now be used either with or without expending Focus Points.

Patient Defense as a defensive focus ability now allows performing a Disengage as a free bonus action. If a Focus Point is spent, it additionally includes a Dodge, placing all incoming attacks at a disadvantage and giving the monk an advantage on Dexterity saving throws.

Step of the Wind enables a Dash as a bonus action for free. With Focus, it adds Disengage and doubles jump distance until the end of your turn.

This adjustment allows the monk to consistently utilize their bonus actions, aligning them with other mobile classes like the rogue.

New Resource Management Tool: Uncanny Metabolism

At Level 2, the monk in D&D 5.5e gains Uncanny Metabolism: Once per long rest, a monk can roll initiative to regain all of his Focus Points

and also heal hit points based on his Martial Arts die and level. This modification resolves a longstanding issue from the old version, where Ki Points were quickly depleted and regenerated slowly.

Deflect Attacks: More than Just Deflecting Projectiles

The classic ability Deflect Missiles was quite limited in 5e, working only against projectile weapons. In 5.5e, this ability has been extended to Deflect Attacks, now reducing physical damage from both melee and ranged attacks (bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing). If the total damage is reduced to 0, the monk can spend a focus point to redirect the attack to a different target.

The New Features at Higher Levels

Heightened Focus (Level 10) significantly enhances Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, and Step of the Wind, each adding features such as extra attacks or temporary hit points.

Self-Restoration (Level 10) allows the monk to automatically remove conditions such as

Charmed, Frightened, or Poisoned at the end of their turn.

Deflect Energy (Level 13) extends Deflect Attacks to include damage of all types.

Perfect Focus (Level 14) regenerates Focus Points at the start of an encounter if fewer than three Focus Points are available and Uncanny Metabolism has not been used before.

Superior Defense (Level 18) allows, upon spending Focus Points, resistance against all types of damage (except force) for a certain period.

Body and Mind (Level 20) grants a +4 bonus to Dexterity and Wisdom, up to a maximum of 25.

A Quick Overview: The Monk’s Subclasses

In the new edition, there are four Monk subclasses:

Warrior of the Elements

Warrior of the Open Hand

Warrior of Shadow

Warrior of Mercy, which has moved from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything into the Player’s Handbook.

For more details on the subclasses/paths, pick up the 5.5e Player’s Handbook.

Conclusion: An All-Around Improved Monk

The 2024 D&D 5.5e Monk is vastly superior to its 2014 version in every way. Once considered the weakest class, it has become one of the stronger ones, offering enjoyment through enhanced basic abilities, a new resource management mechanic, and powerful features at higher levels.

The Wizard is one of the most iconic and oldest classes in Dungeons & Dragons. With the revision from the D&D 5e Player’s Handbook to the new 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒, the Wizards do not experience many changes compared to the druid, for example, but a number of noticeable ones. In this article, we take a look at what has changed for Wizards, what new mechanics have been added and what this specifically means for the game.

This article contains affiliate links where we receive a part of the purchase price.
Changes in the basic mechanics

Although the Wizard class was already solid in the original 5e version, the Player’s Handbook 5.5e brings some targeted adjustments. For example, Spellcasting has been slightly revised: Wizards can now exchange a cantrip during a long rest, among other things, which brings flexibility that was not previously provided. They also gain expertise in a skill area at a lower level, which further emphasizes their role as intellectuals and problem solvers.

In addition, from level 5, the Wizard may swap an already prepared spell for another one at every short rest using the “Memorize Spell” ability. This change noticeably improves tactical flexibility, as the Wizard is no longer dependent on a long rest to switch spells.

Subclasses & Arcane Traditions: greatly reduced, but more focused

One striking aspect of the revision is the drastic reduction of Arcane Traditions/Subclasses for Wizards: In the 5.5e version, there are only four schools to choose from: The schools of Abjuration, Divination, Evocation, and Illusion will remain. This means that the schools of Necromancy, Enchantment, Conjuration, and Transmutation are no longer available as Arcane Traditions in the new version.

Each of the four remaining schools receives targeted improvements or new features:

School of Abjuration: Wizards of this subclass receive an Arcane Ward feature that can now be regenerated by using a spell; in addition, resistances/immunities of damage effects are clearly taken into account beforehand.

School of Divination: This school retains its basic concept, but Wizards of this school will now be able to cast “See Invisibility” without using a spell slot.

School of Evocation: Damage is the focus – with changes such as “Potent Cantrip”, where a cantrip deals at least half damage even if an attack fails.

School of Illusion: This school has the most extensive revisions – illusion spells with verbal components are dropped, ranges are extended, and new features such as “Phantasmal Creatures” have been added.

This focus means that the Wizard class offers less subclass variety, but each remaining school is strengthened in a targeted manner. However, the loss of the schools does not necessarily mean that the corresponding spells are lost. You can still learn and use spells such as necromancy. You can find out which spells are available in detail in the new 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒.

What does this mean for the game?

These changes have some important implications for players and Dungeon Masters. By swapping cantrips and prepared spells, the Wizard becomes more agile and can react better to different situations without having to wait for the next long rest. The expertise in a skill supports the classic role of the Wizard as a scholar and problem solver, not just a damage dealer. Those who miss the classic schools such as Necromancy or Enchantment must decide: Either fall back on older rules, adjust to the four new schools, or switch to another class, such as the Warlock for Necromancers.

The reduction in subclasses bothers some players, but the improved overview, focus and revised abilities are expected to make the game more fluid and balanced. For example, the rules regarding resistances and immunities are now clearer before the Arcane Ward is reduced.

Short overview of the important new features

Exchanging a cantrip after a long rest.

Swapping a prepared spell after a short rest (from level 5).

Expertise in a skill area from level 2.

Arcane traditions/subclasses reduced to four schools.

Each school with new or improved core features (e.g., Potent Cantrip for Evocation; Improved Illusions for Illusion).

Clearer rules regarding resistances/immunities in relation to class features.

Conclusion

The revision of the Wizard class in D&D 5.5e does not involve a complete redesign but targeted fine-tuning. The effects are significant. Those who want to play a Wizard in 5.5e will benefit from greater flexibility and cleaner mechanics. However, those who focused on exotic schools such as Necromancy or Transmutation will be disappointed with the changes. Overall, however, it can be said that the Wizard remains powerful, just a bit leaner.

The cleric is one of the less prestigious classes in Dungeons & Dragons, although he was overpowered in D&D 5e and is also more versatile than any other class. As a link between mortals and gods, he can heal, deal damage and stand between the front and backline. At the same time, he protects the party with divine power. With the new D&D 5.5e 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒, the cleric rules have also been revised. Below you will find the changes with regard to mechanics, balance and player experience.

Divine Order instead of subclass at level 1

One of the key changes is the choice of domain. As we have already explained with the patron for the warlock, the subclass for the cleric is no longer selected at level 1, but now at level 3. For the cleric, the 2024/5.5e version instead introduces the new Divine Order at level 1, where you choose a specialization:

Protector: Focus on armor and combat. They gain skills in heavy armor and with war weapons.

Thaumaturge: Focus on magic and knowledge. They gain an additional cantrip and may add the Wisdom modifier to certain Intelligence checks (e.g., Arcana or Religion).

This change has two major consequences: First, it makes the cleric a bit more “open” in the early levels before he fully bonds with the Divine Domain, and second, it allows for role differentiation between combat cleric and magic enhancer early on.

New options for Channel Divinity

Channel Divinity was an important linchpin of many domain capabilities in the classic 5e version. In the new version, this feature has been revised and expanded.

At level 2, the cleric gains Channel Divinity and additionally the new ability called Divine Spark alongside the already present Turn Undead from D&D 5e. With Divine Spark, the cleric chooses a creature and can either heal it or deal damage to it. A Constitution saving throw must be made against the damage. If this fails, the cleric deals either holy or necrotic damage.

Sear Undead instead of Destroy Undead for more flexibility

One particularly noticeable difference concerns the handling of undead: In the classic 5e version, the cleric can use Destroy Undead at higher levels to automatically destroy undead below a certain CR (Challenge Rating) if they fail their saving throw. In the 2024/5.5e version, this mechanism is replaced by Sear Undead.

Instead of automatically destroying, Sear Undead deals Radiant Damage to all undead that fail against the Turn Undead effect, regardless of their CR. This change removes hard cutoff thresholds and allows even powerful undead to take damage even if they are not destroyed.

Blessed Strikes and Potent Spellcasting at level 7

In the new version, Divine Strike is now called Blessed Strike and is available from level 7. The player can choose between two options:

Divine Strike: Gives additional holy or necrotic damage with weapon attacks.

Potent Spellcasting: You may add the Wisdom modifier to damage from cleric cantrips.

This dual option allows for a stronger specialization: either stronger melee damage or more magic efficiency.

The Divine Domains and specialized abilities in D&D 5.5e

The changes to the domains are minimal and mainly affect the four main domains:

Life (Life Domain): The domain spell list has been adjusted – e.g., Aid has been added to strengthen healing functions.

Light (Light Domain): See Invisibility has been integrated as a domain spell.

Trickery (Trickery Domain): The Invoke Duplicity ability has been expanded, new options have been added.

War (War Domain): Adjustments to Channel Divinity to utilize Shield of Faith or Spiritual Weapon without using a spell slot or concentration.

Conclusion

The changes to the Cleric in the 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒 are subtle, but deeply impact the playstyle. Many features have been shifted to allow for a more consistent progressional feel, new options (Divine Orders, Divine Spark, Sear Undead) have been introduced, and traditional domain features have been reworked to better harmonize with the modern core system.

One of the stated design goals of the new version is to trim clerics more towards consistency rather than multiple overperformances. The focus should be on allowing players to work with clear decisions and without extreme outliers. This becomes particularly clear when you look at the abilities: The change from Destroy Undead to Sear Undead particularly takes out the powergaming aspect of the cleric but gives him more options in combat. In general, the new version feels less like a radical overhaul and more like a refinement: more consistency, more flexible use options, and a clearer role distribution between melee and spell focus. For cleric players, this means a leaner start but more decision-making freedom and more balanced class performance throughout the game.

Everything for a good story: Patron only from level 3

One of the most striking changes concerns the Patron, the entity from which the warlocks draw their power. In D&D 5e, you had your patron from level 1. In D&D 5.5e, this only happens at level 3. In the Player’s Handbook 5e, the patron could be a Fiend, Archfey, or Great Old One. In 5.5e, the Celestials, from “Xanathar’s Guide to Everything”, were added into the Player’s Handbook as possible patrons. However, covenants that now belong to the Eldritch Invocations may now be chosen from level 1. More on this in the following section.

Many refer to this change as “Story Flavor”. The warlock does not know his patron at the beginning and the gamemaster can let the warlock’s experiences subtly introduce the patron throughout gameplay. The moment of recognizing the patron can then be dramatically played out at the table.

Eldritch Invocations and the Abolition of the Pact Boons

The Level 3 Pact Boons have effectively been abolished. Before panic sets in: The pacts are still there. The pacts – Chain, Blade, and Book – remain, but are now Eldritch Invocations and therefore available from level 1. However, many of these Invocations now have level requirements that did not previously exist.

The selection of Eldritch Invocations has also been expanded. As before, however, you can exchange Invocations with each other when leveling up, as long as you don’t want to remove Invocations that are interdependent. Up to level 18, a Warlock in 2024 can have up to 10 Invocations, instead of the 8 in 5e.

Popular invocations such as Repelling Blast and Agonizing Blast are also no longer limited to the Eldritch Blast, but can now be applied to other cantrips. This means that the charisma modifier can now be added to the damage value of all cantrips. Note that Repelling Blast is still limited to cantrips that require an attack roll.

How do pacts work for the Warlock in D&D 5.5e?

Pacts now fall under Invocations and are available from level 1. You are also no longer limited to one pact when leveling up and can theoretically choose all of them, as they are Invocations. Like all Invocations, you can also change the pacts when leveling up.

From a gameplay perspective, this makes sense, as you can determine your playstyle right at the start. With a level 1 Pact of the Blade, the Warlock works better as a melee fighter in the early stages. But you also want a familiar at level 2? No problem: Choose the Pact of the Chain as an Invocation. If you need a little more magic trickery, consider taking the Pact of the Tome and have your patron hand you the Book of Shadows when you level up again. If you want all three pacts, you can have all three pacts.

Adjustments to the subclasses

In addition to the core changes, each subclass (patron) has undergone some adjustments:

Archfey: Additional effects for teleportation, mixed forms of movement spells, etc.

Celestial: Introduced in the new rulebooks (in 5e via “Xanathar’s Guide to Everything”) available or rebalanced. Celestial Warlocks have significantly more spells, including Summon Celestial.

Fiend: Classic mechanics such as gaining temporary hit points (Dark One’s Blessing) have been reworked so that you gain bonus HP even if it’s not you who defeats the enemy, but someone nearby.

Great Old One: These have been heavily reworked. Essentially, the Great Old One has been completely rebuilt as a patron. Small teaser: Summon Aberrations and more powerful Mind control. Consult the Player’s Handbook urgently!

Conclusion

The Warlock becomes more modular, more flexible, and in many cases more powerful. Some players criticize the late subclass selection (only from level 3) as a narrative break, while others celebrate this as a great story element. Many welcome the strengthened base class and the more deeply integrated options, especially with regard to the warlock in melee combat. It remains to be seen how the changes will affect gameplay at the table.

With the 2024 Player’s Handbook 🛒, many classes have undergone extensive changes. As a staple in nearly every group and often indispensable, the new rules aim to provide greater versatility, tactical options, and enhanced role-playing at the table.

We can’t cover every detail in this article, so we have summarized the most significant changes to the Fighter from 2014 to 2024 here.

Adapted and new abilities of the Fighter in 5.5e

Below is a clear summary of the most important changes the Fighter has received in 5.5e:

Ability

Level

Change / New feature

Weapon Mastery

Level 1

Weapon Masteries are specific features on weapons, varying by weapon. Certain classes (Barbarians, Fighters, Paladins, Rangers, and Rogues) possess Weapon Mastery, allowing them to utilize the Weapon Mastery of a weapon. Fighters start with three different weapons (one more than other classes). Please refer to the 5.5e Player’s Handbook for details.

Fighting Styles

Level 1

Remains but is modified: All Fighting Styles, including those from “Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything”, are now available in the PHB. Fighters can change their selected style upon leveling up, enhancing their flexibility.

Second Wind

Level 1

Becomes more versatile with higher levels (see Tactical Mind and Tactical Shift). Heals 1d10 + Fighter level as a bonus action. Receives two charges, one replenished during a short rest and all during a long rest.

Tactical Mind

Level 2

New option for Second Wind: Bonus of 1d10 to attempt rescuing failed Ability Checks. Important: A Second Wind charge is only consumed if the check succeeds, minimizing risk and making it more appealing.

Tactical Shift

Level 5

When deploying Second Wind as a bonus action, you can make a move at an additional half your speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Indomitable

Level 9

Now adds Fighter level to rerolls besides allowing a reroll of a failed Saving Throw, significantly enhancing resilience.

Tactical Mastery

Level 9

Enables the Fighter to flexibly switch the Weapon Master feature of the weapon they are using for Push, Sap, or Slow.

Studied Attacks

Level 13

New mechanic: Failing an attack grants advantage on the next attack against the same target, increasing hit probability and rewarding tactical play.

Epic Boon

Level 19 (and above)

From level 19, Fighters receive an Epic Boon with each level gain, allowing for attribute increases beyond the normal cap (up to 30) and additional abilities.

Changes to the subclasses (Martial Archetypes)

The 5e Player’s Handbook of 2014 offered only three subclasses: Battle Master, Champion, and Eldritch Knight. In 2024, the 5.5e Player’s Handbook introduced the Psi Warrior from “Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything” and made minor adjustments to existing classes. Here’s an overview of the changes to the Fighter’s subclasses:

Battle Master: Minor modifications. Includes additional maneuvers from “Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything”, and some adjustments have been made. For instance, Know Your Enemy no longer requires observation time and now shows only the creature’s resistances, weaknesses, and immunities.

Champion: Increased focus on critical hits while maintaining the classic warrior essence. Innovations such as Heroic Warrior (Level 10, grants Inspiration at the start of the turn if none is left), advantage on initiative and athletic checks, and critical hits on rolls of 18 and above, ensuring reliable damage output.

Eldritch Knight: More flexibility in spell school selections; no longer limited to specific schools. War Magic now enables substituting spells for attacks, among other minor modifications.

Psi Warrior: Remains mostly unchanged compared to its current form in “Tasha’s”, but benefits from the overall changes to the Fighter, enhancing both synergy and applicability.

Conclusion

The updates from D&D 5e to D&D 5.5e bring significant enhancements and new playing strategies for the Fighter. There is a clear focus on enhanced flexibility, tactical options, and useful skills outside of direct confrontations. Through Weapon Mastery and Tactical Master, the Fighter can superbly protect his backline (e.g., with Push), by effectively removing opponents from his allies.

Having always been a popular class, we will likely see an increase in Fighters at the table equipped with these new abilities.

With the introduction of the new 2024 D&D 5.5e Players Handbook 🛒, Druids have received some significant revisions. Almost no aspect has been left untouched: from Wild Shape to subclasses and combat styles, there have been a whole host of changes. The changes to animal form in particular are causing a lot of discussion on Reddit. We have summarized the most important changes here.

What changes to Wild Shape for Druids in D&D 5.5e?

Bonus action instead of action: Druids now only need one bonus action to take animal form. This provides more options, especially in combat. Duration corresponds to the druid level in hours.

Speaking: Wild Shape no longer breaks speech. Druids can communicate in animal form.

Temporary hit points instead of own hit pool: Instead of adopting the animal form’s hit points, druids retain their own hit points and gain temporary hit points equal to their druid level.

These changes for druids in 5.5e have been met with mixed feelings. Many players have used their animal form to bring massive hit points into combat. If a druid saved their animal form for combat, they could use up the animal’s hit points before they could use their own. This option is now basically no longer available, as the temporary hit points are negligible.

Players who played as Druids in D&D 5e in their animal form are celebrating the new possibilities that arise from the changes to the druid in D&D 5.5e. In particular, the ability to continue to communicate with their troops is a powerful feature.

Wild Shape: Spells, Spell Slots, and Wild Shape Charges

Wild Resurgence (from level 5): When all Wild Shape charges have been exhausted, a spell slot can be consumed to restore one charge. This also works in reverse: a Wild Shape charge can be sacrificed for a level 1 spell slot.

Beast Spells (from level 18): Druids can cast spells in beast form as long as no material component is required.

Wild Shape: “Known Forms” and selection options

Druids learn a limited number of Wild Shape forms (“Known Forms”). The number and CR (Challenge Rating) limit increase with level.

Flexible adaptation: During a long rest, a known form can be exchanged for another.

The aim of this change to the Druid in D&D is to reduce the amount of time spent flipping through the Monster Manual during gameplay. Everyone knows the druid who had to rummage through all the animals right after the initiative roll. These changes help to prevent these delays.

Druid or Primal Order: Focus on spells or melee

Loss of Medium Armor Proficiency

Druids now choose a Primal Order. The aim is to steer the druid toward either a martial or magical direction early on.

Magician: Adds an extra cantrip. For Arcana and Nature checks, the Wisdom modifier is added to the Intelligence modifier.

Warden: Grants proficiency bonuses to medium armor classes and war weapons. The Warden thus regains the proficiency on medium armor classes lost by other druids.

Elemental Fury, where one of the options can be selected:

Primal Strike (melee combat): Adds 1d8 (later 2d8) of cold/fire/thunder/lightning damage to weapon attacks or attacks in animal form once per turn.

Potent Spellcasting (cantrips): Adds the Wisdom modifier to cantrip damage; at level 15, increases the range of cantrips to 300 feet.

What circles are there for the druid in D&D 5.5e?

Circle of the Moon: Improves Armor Class in animal form to 13 + Wisdom modifier (or the animal form’s AC, if higher). Druids of this circle also gain temporary hit points equal to three times their druid level, deal more radiant damage, and receive “Moonlight Step” (similar to Misty Step, teleporting over 30 feet as a bonus action).

Circle of the Land: Druids can now attune to the surrounding terrain and land after a long rest. Previously, the druid had to choose a land type at creation. Druids of this circle can call upon the land for aid (Land’s Aid), either to deal massive damage or to heal.

Circle of the Sea: A new Circle based on the storm and the wildness of the sea, equipping its druids with an aura that deals damage and knocks down enemies. Focus on thunder, lightning, and cold damage.

Circle of the Stars: Remains largely unchanged from 5e. The class was introduced in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything in 2020.

Conclusion: More options and greater flexibility, but no more Bear Tank

Overall, the Druid class in D&D 5.5e has received well-thought-out updates:

Faster, more flexible use of Wild Shape, including the ability to communicate.

Choice between a focus on spells or melee, with thematically appropriate buffs.

New circles with clear play styles and fresh gameplay.

Wild Resurgence and Beast Spells broaden options in combat and beyond.

Generally less focus on powerful tanking, but much more varied, modern, and balanced.

The Reddit community views the changes overall as more balanced and versatile. The druid has become more variable and flexible in his playstyle. However, those who have used their druid as a living meat shield in bear form might need to convince their group to stick with the D&D 5e Player’s Handbook 🛒 from 2014.

The gods of D&D

1. The standard pantheon of the Forgotten Realms

The Forgotten Realms (Forgotten Realms) is one of the best-known D&D settings. There is a rich pantheon here, ranging from powerful gods of magic to dark rulers of death.

2. The Greyhawk Pantheon

Greyhawk, one of the oldest D&D worlds, has its own set of gods that is heavily influenced by classic fantasy elements. It offers gods for almost every sphere of life and is of particular interest to fans of the early editions.

3. The Exandria pantheon

The world of Critical Role 🛒 has a unique pantheon developed by Matt Mercer and his team. Gods such as the Twilight Princess and the Archfather are of central importance here.

4. Other pantheons

In addition to those mentioned above, there are also universal gods that are worshiped in different worlds. Some gods, such as Vecna, the god of light, even transcend the boundaries between worlds.

Table of the most important D&D gods

Here you will find an overview of central deities from various pantheons with their associated domains (Domains) and alignments (Alignment).

The importance of domains

In D&D, the domains of a deity are crucial to the abilities of clerics who worship that god. For example, clerics of Pelor gain access to healing and light-based spells, while followers of Vecna can explore dark secrets and necromancy.

Here are some of the most important domains and their typical attributes:

Life: Healing, protection, support

Death: Necromancy, curses, control over undead

War: battle spells, divine wrath

Magic: Arcane control, protection from magical influences

Nature: Connection to the wilderness, communication with animals and plants

The interplay of gods and mortals

The relationship between gods and their mortal followers can be multifaceted. Some cultures worship several gods and present them as part of a cosmic balance. Others fanatically worship individual deities and align their entire way of life with their commandments.</p

Gods in D&D – Conclusion

Whether you’re playing a cleric or simply want to explore the mythology of your campaign world, the pantheon of gods offers an inexhaustible source of inspiration and possibilities. Think about how your characters see the world of the gods and how their beliefs shape their actions.
